Mazda's engineers are currently working on Wankel's rotary engine, which strives to make it more efficient while cutting CO2 emissions to continue with Mazda's eco-friendly efforts. A senior Mazda inspector says that if the new rotating sports car gets the right funding, the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions from the current RX-8 level of 299 g / km to just 130 g / km.

One way Mazda is trying to achieve this reduction in emissions is through the use of laser ignition. Eliminating the need for spark plugs enables a lighter combustion chamber with laser ignition.
